I’ve watched most of Kubrick’s other celebrated films but I hadn’t seen this one for some reason. There were moments with the lighting and cinematography that I could tell it was a Kubrick film. A few images are among his most striking, such as the classic scene where Humbert sees Lolita for the first time in the yard. The camera tracking along with her across the stage during the play scene was incredible.

This is a challenging and disturbing film. I can’t fault people for not liking it, calling it heavy handed or unredeeming. It is undoubtedly and unapologetically both of those things. But an important bit of context is that the filmmaker is Asian-American and this film represents her greatest nightmares which are very much a reality in American society right now. It’s ugly and doesn’t offer any direct solutions, but it confronts the viewer with an awful situation where nobody does…
