When the world is inescapably brutal, concertedly seeing an artistic creation through to completion is a useful obsession. Yet without talent, is there a cathartic arrival point if it’s not about the journey? I’ve been lucky enough to worry about journeys and rewards but that’s not a luxury afforded to many of those who suffer, and everybody deserves an ethos that keeps them motivated to carry on.

A never ending exercise in letting people know this film is not like other films. Is this a script issue, a directorial issue? Can’t say and don’t care to discern. The film assumes the subversion of customs and expectations is inherently interesting but proves in the process that it’s not. The only thing saving this from a single star are Defoe and Pattinson doing amazing work with a burdensome task.

Over time, it becomes increasingly challenging to retreat within one’s self and invent worlds of one’s own to improve upon or escape the present. Creativity is a wellness practice and without exercise, the imagination will atrophy like a forgotten muscle. Allow this masterpiece to infuse you with the spirit of creativity and then take a piece of it with you into the world. Like our hero Ofelia, nobody can take that away from you.

My late Great Aunt Shannon used to gleefully tell me in my college years that I was a “weird kid” and then cackle. I do miss her. I wanted to be a film critic as a child, so she was certainly right. What could be more fitting for my first Letterboxd review than a film whose antagonist is a critic. Yes in this case it’s theater but I like to think she represents the ever foolhardy endeavor of critiquing art.…
