    Gladiator II

    So this was, like, fine. It had the impossible task of being “gladiator II” - if I ever need to cry on command the ending of the first one is one of the things I think about. And you can’t just follow that up, and hit those same emotional notes. It tried though, but it came off as rather hollow.

    Conclave

    The constant tension (that breathing!) made the painstaking ritual of the catholic church interesting. Great dialogue and passages of awesome rhetoric, and I like the whole thing with the character of Benitez. I dig it. My favorite part is when the dean of cardinals used the xerox machine.

    I love the short story as much as I hate the satanism in this film. BUT the last act was fantastic. That was an inspired interpretation of the material. And I dug the nod to “Hopfrog” - that was a good way to fill out the rest of the  1 hour of this film until the real juicy bit of the story, not that weird satanic shit. But Vincent Price is always good.

    It sure feels dated, but the story is excellent, and I like that it takes its time to build the characters and their relationship. And also Tim Curry.
