This film's premise is it's strongest asset. Four men are hired to remove asbestos from an abandoned asylum. Beautifully presented and astonishingly convincing, Lake Mungo blends deeply emotional family drama with slow and subtle horror in a fantastically acted faux documentary that delivers in spades. While some may come to the film expecting believable scares, Lake Mungo, while scratching that itch, is at it's core a deeply human exploration of grief and coming to terms with loss. While overwhelmingly somber, it is a surprisingly heartfelt film with deep and sympathetic characters, and is certainly worth your time.

The Whale is a difficult film for me to critique, as every objection I have with it can be written off with the phrase "well that's kinda the point!"
