  The Ten Commandments 1923

  The Prologue has awesome sets and set-pieces, and great special effects. The remaining bulk of the film consists of a nicely drawn melodrama which I enjoyed overall, but which committed a misstep by mixing New Testament with Old--Exodus with Matthew. This decision to go all Jesus-y Christianizes the story to an unnecessary degree, potentially alienating Jewish viewers who of course also regard the Old Testament as a holy book. And anyway, if I'm watching "The Ten Commandments" I want to see the masculine, 'I'll Kill You All', tyrannical God of the Old Testament, and not the flowery 'I'll Cure Your Leprosy' of the New.
