The pros and cons of The Three Treasures are the pros and cons of a classical and classically performed historical melodrama. It’s an Arthurian-ish adventure with the traditional tropes of Japanese folklore. It’s got Orochi, the 8 headed dragon, tales within tales of gods and trickery, blood feuds, familial betrayal, love triangles, sacrifices, a mystical sword etc.
Unfortunately much of it is performed so straight and mannered that a lot of it plays like a turgid biblical epic where everyone is afraid…
