In a Year with 13 Moons 1978
Very struck this time by the chaotic absurdity of the final scene through Marie-Ann’s eyes—the feeling of someone you love has died and there’s a random person doing something completely insane and irrelevant in the same room, is so resonant. Death making no sense and lending no meaning to the collection of people who have been brought together in the journey to try and understand a painfully tortured and fractured existence. The insignificant smallness of Elvira’s off centered body speaking to what suicide leaves behind as this hastily assembled collective of chaos and misunderstanding. Visually stunning horribly sad movie.

The Watchmaker of St. Paul 1974
An utterly spellbinding mystery, the trick of which is that we are as invested (if not more) in the reasons why the relationship between Descombes and his son has broken down as we are in the reasons for the crime which opens the film. Even in his debut Tavernier does not disappoint, coming out instead almost fully formed. This is another film which allows us to spend some quiet hours with people who feel so real, and their small dramas…

The Long Gray Line 1955
Just cried like five times watching this. Life is too short and also so long, joy and sorrow bleed into one another, even when you don’t get everything you want the power of love and friendship makes it all worth it. Lost my mind when Maureen O’Hara showed up at the end.
