As a preface I have not watched Au Hasard Balthazar prior to Eo. Eo sets the tone from the beginning that this isn’t a Disney fell good movie. We’re met with not only absurd themes for a donkey to be involved in but also unique cinematography giving the sense Eo is living within a horror film. This is where Eo thrives, the use of color and angles move this story along even when parts the written story seem to be a bit choppy.
Not an easy film to just throw on after work but you get what you put into it. The density of the themes and material cause the viewer do a double take at every scene. Normally one can view many dense films from two lenses, one where they view it from the surface and the other from six feet deep in the midst of it. Persona is one of the few films that does not give the viewer this choice, you’re swimming in the deep end from the get go.
