Noroi is an incredibly good and effective horror mockumentary. The first half elegantly builds a world of psychics and supernatural happenings via Japanese variety show and supernatural documentary scenes, laying the groundwork for the horrifying escalation of the second half. The last 20 minutes go hard as hell, paying off all the tension built up over the film. A triumph of atmosphere and world building, where even the sort of amateurish CGI effects really work and are scary as hell.

The Damned 2024
Beautifully filmed, atmospheric slow-burner about a 19th century fishing station crew far to the north descending into starvation and madness. You can feel the cold and the hunger and anxiety building throughout. The ending caught me a bit off-guard, and I could see it being divisive, but upon thinking back through the film it really works elegantly.

Time to Hunt 2020
Fantastic Korean neo-noir. The near future capitalist dystopia setting and the desperation of the four protagonists was incredibly compelling, and the ultraviolent villain (and the second act reveal) was excellent. Highly highly recommended.
