Fucking horrifying—but great! RIP Satoshi Kon. You would’ve loved and hated the internet. This film, Paprika, and Tokyo Godfathers are such an amazing prediction of how we’ve deteriorated our sense of community in a global scale.
While Perfect Blue captures the regional phenomenon of Japanese Idol niches, the audience’s parasocial turn can be observed in all corners of the internet. I also love how this movie approaches ( THANK YOU ANIMATION ) a meta perspective. We constantly jump from screen to screen, playing with our understandings of reality. It’s just brilliant.
This is my fav slasher movie. The killings aren’t just there to be there but they all serve as the creation of Pearl as the “villain”. I’m only framing it this way because we as the audience aren’t supposed to view her a villainous character; not just right away at least.
