What’s most surprising upon revisiting is just how well it balances the dark and real consequences the WW2 era with its romantic hopefulness. It’s so clear how many films continue to borrow from it.

Genuinely surprised to not see as many critical reviews for this. It’s not even about the outdated nature of the film. Narratively felt akin to a schlocky hallmark rom com. It all feels predatory and the worst part is the film itself knows it and plays it off for laughs.
