a few good aquatic scenes shot in a fishtank , lots of pretty greek landscapes. alan ladd continuously upstages himself with progressively more and more outrageous cardigans as the movie progresses, eventually adding an ascot , making his romance with sofia loren (drenched through her clothes for much of the film) a bit tough to chew..

moody seaside crime & punishment tale with more rain and mud than a bela tarr movie..... psychologically daft but deeply sensory vision of french hell

depicts war orphans as so contemptible that they include a content warning TWICE letting the audience know that some war orphans arent that bad and can actually grow up to be bakers or longshoremen

has one of my favourite tropes in a french film where a guy cuts a giant wedge of bread with a butter knife and then slathers it in a pound of butter , yum!

adam curtis increasingly sounding like a thomas pynchon protagonist through this, constantly adding more and more marginal characters and events to a giant pinboard with no clear antagonist in sight beyond a nebulous system of power and surveillance. the youtube autoplay vibe is compulsively engaging, as is the repeated use of the same aphex twin songs over and over
