Emile Hirsch coming to tears as he's relating the story of how he didn't get laid at the club last weekend--pure platinum. I'll watch this as many times as I can.
This was my first Todd Solondz movie, and it's a green flag to keep going. It reminded me of Chris Ware's Rusty Brown comics, with a bit of Napoleon Dynamite in the protagonist's demeanor. Entertaining in its own right, the quasi-fantasy scenes really won me over. I think that this is a very clever movie. It also feels like an inverse of The Comedian to me.
It's pretty and it sounds great, but I DON'T CARE. I don't care for 93 minutes. I didn't want to see a testament to the human spirit, and I sure as shit didn't want to see some hallucination act as the spark that lights the survival fuse. What Will Go Wrong Next?: The Movie.
Greengrass does it again. What is "it"? Makes a palatable movie after leaving a great mark on an excellent action franchise. I'm not crazy about it, but the final few scenes were incredibly intense. Points for getting me all into it. Efficacious, if nothing else!
