Gorgeous. I'll need to see it again to organize my thoughts on it. But damn, what a great film.

My biggest problem, but at the same time my greatest pleasure, with Kar-Wai's previous film, As Tears Go By, was the the melodrama. It was fun and pretty, but also indulgent and by the end tiresome (I must be getting old). But in Days of Being Wild there is a deep maturity to it. Pick any scene from the film and it could have easily become morose and angsty, but Kar-Wai chose to ground, or bookend, what could have been indulgent melodrama in a more realist look at this slice of Hong Kong life.

The lights came up and I felt like I'd had a singular experience. 1917 is beautiful, haunting, surreal, terrifying, hopeful, and full of despair. This film takes you to hell and back over and over again. Its a ride you don't want, but you wouldn't leave even if you had the chance. Go see it on the biggest screen possible as soon as you can.

If this film had been shot traditionally it would still be a good film, but…

We don't get enough coming of age tales about young women. Lady Bird delights with its complex character and their complex relationships. And it's really funny too.
