i'm going to admit something: the first time i watched this was on my laptop in a tucked away corner at the hungry bear restaurant in disneyland at about 10 in the morning and i was inundated with glare from the sun, construction noises, and people coming to ask if they could take chairs from my table the entire time. so i definitely missed a lot...!

but i stand by my previous review: it's really fun and dumb and it rocks. and i want to live in the alternate universe where halloween became an anthology series.

i truly don't understand what everyone else sees in this movie. almost turned this off at several points. didn't like a single thing about it. nearly every minute is dreary and joyless. the lead character is so unlikable, unpleasant, unsympathetic.

i also found it pretty hard to root for a romance where one of them calls the other a racial slur at least 3 times. and then he cheats on him. there's no tenderness and the love lacks any passion or reason.

52 films in 52 weeks: in a cold setting.

i mean... this slapped. really didn't know what to expect going in and it really surprised me!! some of the vis effects didn't age particularly well, but it's not that bad. ava's uncanny-ness is kind of the point, so it works in the text at least. great performances!! great script!! i liked this a lot.

i also have opinions on watching this thru a feminist lens but i'll keep them to myself. but to summarize: i think that aspect of it was fairly thoughtfully done.
