I personally found this film predictable and mostly style over substance. I dislike the director’s use of people with disfigurements/disabilities as horror imagery. I’m not sure the screams and moments of emotional extremis of the characters were earned or substantial. The feverish imagery and colour palette is striking and effective, but again I feel the style and aesthetic was prioritised over substance and depth.
This film is beloved to my heart. The combination of death (vampires) and laughter is a special one, and the silliness is nicely balanced with good characterisation and plot. I laugh out loud at this film even with every rewatch. Unique, lighthearted while being entertaining and warm. A lovely and funny film.
A medieval dream. More sensory than story (to me). An experience to have wash over you, taken best when the sounds and images are allowed to sink in to your mind without resistance.
