I wanted to like free state of Jones more than I did. I actually think McConaughey doesn't do a great job in this movie, and trying to combine the myth and the fact around the story of Newton Knight does a disservice to his actual service to the Union. The story becomes somewhat disjointed by the middle act, and it starts to drag out.
Not much else to say honestly, just a rather disappointing attempt at an interesting story.
One of the few movies at 3.5 hours that actually meets the moment. And while you can say a few things about having De Niro play a younger character, and it SHOWS, anything outside the silly action scenes is great, great work.

EDIT: Upped this to a 1 star review just because the characters did something unexpected, so here's the floor. Science is bad, vfx is bad, safety advice is bad. Kieran Shipka is the best part of the movie, IYKYK.

I used the word unfulfilled to describe this movie. It is so close to being a solid picture. The cinematography is wonderous, some of the shots of the architecture and the quarry give a sense of wonder and solitude, which I think might be the point. The shots of America and the countryside are also beautiful and there is a particular scene of a railroad that envokes…
