I've been going through my YouTube likes like a psycho and wanted to give this a rewatch before I unliked it and man, I was not ready for how uncomfortable it made me! I'd completely forgotten anything outside of the lambs being eaten and then rescued, so this was an interesting rewatch.

This felt weird while I was watching it, but at first I thought, how can this be ableist if it's Makayla's own words?
Then I read EvilMonkeyToes and Juju's reviews.
I'm going to trust the lived experiences of these people who live with and/or work with non-verbal people over this inspiration porn.
I think the worst part of the film for me was the Snapchat video of Makayla running around at 3am. Why would you film something like that, and why the hell would you share it with a documentary crew? Absolutely despicable all around. Everyone involved (except Makayla) should be ashamed of themselves.

This is why it's important to watch films about Mexico made by Mexican filmmakers! Also why you should watch films about trans people made by trans people! It's a shame this is getting major awards buzz over something like I Saw the TV Glow.
The good: I didn't know Zoe Saldaña could sing! She's mostly innocent in this mess. Karla Sofia Gascón is at least a real trans person, and not a cis actor playing gender queer. And she's fine…
