Jim Carrey is annoyingly hyperactive. Poor Tommy Lee Jones is in a depression and hating every minute. Val Kilmer is pouting, and the circus is in town. This is the film in a nutshell.
Okay, it's not all bad...
While Schumacher is despised for ruining the franchise, I will give credit where it is due. Maybe it's just 2025 goggles, but the art direction and style have a certain nostalgia.
I don't know... Perhaps we are so used to muted…
Inky. Dreamy. A Hollywood screenwriter, a dead girl and a neighbour across the road who falls in love with him. They don't make movies like this anymore. No one thinks the audience has the brains for them. Crisp dialogue, clever even. Sentimental? Sure. But what movie with Humphrey Bogart isn't? Hollywood on Hollywood at its finest. Taps into something akin to Sunset Boulevard, but without the pantomime feel. You'll light up a smoke with the cast and wonder, "could he really do it?" Watch the movie to find out.
What can you say about this film. It is a masterpiece of a sort, but not as it intends to be. I sat down on Boxing Day to watch this. I should start by pointing out that Eva Green has some great films under her belt, and Martin Campbell previously directed Casino Royale.
But... Alas... this is definitely not Casino Royale.
Eva, bless her, is a versatile actress. She's French, but you wouldn't know it from her traditionally typecast role…
