Dawn of the Dead 2004
A significantly worse movie than I remember it being, even without twenty years of better zombie movies coming out after it. I love Sarah Polley, she and the other actors do their best to lend some emotional weight to a predictable story that lacks basically all the subtlety and satire of the original. The action is undercut by choppy editing and ridiculous slow-mo – all of Zach Snyder’s worst habits are on full display already in 2004.

In the Name of the Father 1993
A devastating, powerful story about injustice and prejudice, and a heartbreaking look at the relationship between a father and son. At times scenes fly by too fast; the movie is at its best when it slows down and gives its cast (DDL! Emma Thompson! Pete Postlethwaite! Surprise Tom Wilkinson!) the room to act their asses off. Great sets and locations that are filled with action.

Lee 2023
A bland telling of an interesting story. Kate Winslet is good as usual but no other part of the movie, from the design and editing to the bizarrely star-studded cast, does anything to elevate it to the level of its subject’s work and experience in WWII. The framing device of Josh O’Connor’s interview adds nothing.

Bad Education 2004
Almodóvar is ridiculous. Gael García Bernal is a demon twink. One Thousand and One Nights for faggots.
