The House of the Devil 2009
Thought for sure on rewatch this would get a boost, but there’s something missing here despite a ton of effective atmosphere. The payoff doesn’t justify the painfully slow pacing and the ending is a flat-out problem. I’m very much in on Ti West though I think my feelings on X are largely the same.

Felt to me like someone read an article about this specific scam, which is fleshed out in detail, and decided to write the movie. The characters are pretty flat and the resolution is anticlimactic. It’s messaging is heavy handed in the extreme. Still, Aubrey Plaza is enjoyable and surprisingly believable, elevating some pretty cliched characterization. I didn't dislike it.
