  caved and bought the criterion blu ray because it stuck in my head days after watching for the first time.

  catherine deneuve is one of my ingenue heroes (equal only to isabelle adjani imo). she brings so much nuance and interiority to séverine, and succeeds in her resistance of definitive character trope. not quite sure how i 100% feel about buñel yet, but their collaboration here is excellent, subversive, and speaks to the better themes of what the inherently transgressive libertine 'genre' has to offer
