    Groundhog Day

    One of the best written comedies. The premise is inherently difficult: seeing the same scenes over and over could easily make the film a tiresome slog. But it's written and edited such that we see the perfect amount of each day, we feel the arduous repetitiveness and lengthy transformation Phil Connors has to undergo, while also making the runtime fly by. Its amazing the journey it's able to convey with so few scenes.

    For much of the runtime I was convinced that this was one of the best movies I'd ever seen. I can't help but feel disappointed at its ending. It just confirms everything we already expected. Everything becomes literal and one dimensional, without adding anything new or thought provoking. Still a fantastic movie, but I would have preferred a more abstract ending.

    An entertaining enough movie, but overall quite mediocre. There's plenty of interesting ideas in the film, but its concept has potential that was never fully committed to. The movie delves into pure silliness, leaving its worldbuilding, and all of its characters, are very flatly drawn. The film's style of humour doesn't work for me, and it's much reliant on making fun of caricature villains who were mostly just irritating when on screen.

    Near Dark

    Similar in style to something James Cameron would make. Most of the shots are very well composed and have a great dynamic between the technological/artificial and the primal instincts of the characters, the oil well scene being a very obvious example. In particular, the artificial lights are used perfectly to play on shapes and shadows in the characters' faces. Combined with the heavy, lurid make-up it really distorts and dehumanises the way that they look.
