Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms 2023
Chinese mythology is documented in greatly varied sources and doesn’t have an integrated system. For this reason I greatly appreciate the writer’s meticulous effort in material selection and recreation. While the characters and plots are strictly loyal to the selected mythological texts, the world-building is refreshing, and completely sense-making.
The film has a very flat texture with very little or no character development and suspension. this fable texture however suits the theme very well. I also like the slightly (probably unintentional) touch of eternity in the storytelling.
The above two reasons make the film’s awkward cinematography, dialogue, casting and acting bearable.
