The switching between Russian and English and then Russian again in just a few sentences gave me so much joy I can’t even explain it. Dialogue carrieddddr. Sean baker, GREAT job making a film mostly about Russian people without being embarrassing about it. And the ending, of course !
I’ve fallen into a deep Reddit hole that tries to label this film as “Dostoyevskian” lol I would never go so far as to compare Baker to Dostoyevsky but I do feel like Baker successfully pulled out certain kinds of nuances about Russian culture and Russian / Russian American human experience that I just wasn’t expecting

I may die alone on this hill but I’m just gonna say it…I was bored out of my mind during this film.

I think I had higher hopes for this. The visuals are definitely beautiful and dark and haunting. It was PRETTY to look at. The performances are uncomfortable and unsettling, but why did it also feel SO empty?

The plot seemed underdeveloped. I didn't really feel much nuance in count Orlok’s character. He was not scary!! And what’s with the mustache?
