It’s fascinating how little you would have to change about this for it to work as a prequel to Scream. John Waters has to tone wayyyy down to be this accessible, but it’s so damn funny when hints of his early work come out.

The Palm Beach Story 1942
80% of this is just a smoothly written and fun rom-com. The other 20% is one of the most over the top hilarious comedy bits I’ve ever seen and an absolutely insane intro + ending combo that ties it all together.

To Be or Not to Be 1942
Threw this on intending for it to be on in the background, but it fully grabbed me 2 minutes in and I ended up watching it in its entirety and liking it even more the second time around. I’m not sure there’s ever been a film that’s both this funny and this culturally significant during its release. For all the love Ernst Lubitsch got in his time, it was never enough.
Can’t wait to double feature this with Inglorious Basterds in my future home theater and have a Nazi flag burning during the intermission.
