Blue Velvet 1986
In my opinion, Lynch’s most essential film. Dissects the idyllic imagery of Americana in such shocking and unsettling ways, prying open and laying bare the dark sides of people that we choose to suppress and ignore. It’s characters are nuanced, as opposed to black and white caricatures of good and bad. Yet despite its shocking nature, it still finds room for hope and naive innocence to tie it all together.
The In Dreams sequence is probably my favourite scene of all time.

This was absolutely phenomenal.
Sat down for the first episode and ended up sitting up til 2 in the morning watching the whole thing.
I think it’s incredibly rare to find something that approaches subject matter like this in such a nuanced way.
