There are some movies that are just so good that it makes me jealous of the minds responsible for bringing them to life. The script was brilliant, inventive and off-the-wall absurd, and I can't imagine how fun it must have been to work on it. This movie truly felt like a new thing, and I can't think of a weakness. The performances, the visual style, the storytelling, everything about it was first-class.
I don't leave too many movies feeling creatively inspired. In fact, most of the time that's not even what I'm looking for. But wow is it a pleasant surprise when it actually happens.
This was everything the 2016 movie wasn't -- funny, self-aware, entertaining, took itself as seriously as the subject matter demanded. That is to say, not at all.
If Studio Ghibli, Twilight, and Stardew Valley had a baby it would be this movie.
A single mother struggles to raise her wolf-children after her husband dies, and moves into an abandoned home in the country to live off the land. Here, her kids are free to be themselves and find their own paths in life. The mother struggles to let go, even though this is exactly what she wanted for them.
