    Knock at the Cabin

First and foremost, this reviewer deeply apologizes for the delay. An ongoing custody battle is no excuse to be negligent of one’s craft.

This reviewer had the unfortunate luck to sit down with Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. A director short on ideas, Knock at the Cabin meets the paltry expectations associated with Shyamalan’s work in recent years. Insipid characters representing the four horsemen of the apocalypse task a couple with a choice, sacrifice a loved one or face the…

    M3GAN

    ★½

There is no denying that this reviewer had bought into the hype surrounding M3gan (2022). Unfortunately, however, the noise surrounding this picture proved to be just that; noise. M3gan explores the relationship surrounding technology and parenting; unfortunately, the viewer is bludgeoned over the head with obvious metaphors from the moment this movie begins. If subtlety is not director Gerard Johnstone’s strong suit, neither is pacing or character development. A cast of tremendously unlikelable characters with no depth engage in what…

Needless to say, this reviewer has lost his appetite after sitting down with Fresh (2022). A film that touches on the seemingly indomitable hellscape of online dating from the perspective of women, Fresh serves up its message in an oft gruesome and uncomfortable (but always uproarious) manner. Admittedly, the movie is a slow burn and takes some time to find its feet; however, past the thirty minute mark, you will find it hard to take your eyes off the screen unless withdrawing in squeamishness. A twistedly fun picture that never takes its plot too seriously, certainly worth a watch for those with an iron stomach.

    Barton Fink

    ★★★★★

A witty, dark and heady masterpiece by the Coens and admittedly a personal favorite of this reviewer. Goodman and Turturro dazzle as they explore “the life of the mind” and the relationship between art and man. These roles demand subtext and nuance, until they do not. This reviewer recommends multiple viewings to fully appreciate the hilarity underpinning the self-importance and quasi-nobility of the titular Fink. Even among the Coen’s catologue boasting such all-timers as No Country for Old Men and The Big Lewbowski, Barton Fink still manages to shine through as a gem.
