Felt very cheap and uninspired, whereas the first movie stands out vivid in my mind after a single viewing a decade ago this movie feels extremely generic with superficial elements transplanted to revive some shred of nostalgia to fuel the streaming content mill. The standard playbook now I guess. It was still a fun story and environment and I would rate it higher but the movie is also shot really strangely with constant zooms on faces and the sound is balanced so awfully there are constant loud dronings that add no atmosphere.
Quite a few beautiful performances. PSH as always is fantastic, and Tom cruise is perfect for the role of frank. Use your regret, use it for anything. The movie is frequently meta but somehow doesn’t feel it. The meta call outs are all very specific, someone saying this is like a scene in a movie or a character saying this is a thing that really happens. Perhaps it’s because the meta awareness is so specific and blunt that it fits…
I watched the ultimate cut. This time I viewed the whole movie without stopping and it was fun the whole way through. I think people underrate the amount of fun this movie has even when being super dark, as many complain that the comic wasn't so dark. Even if it's not the same type of funny the movie can still be clever and silly.
I think when Dr. Manhattan is being created might be my favorite scene of any movie ever.
An easy five stars, this movie captures a part of what can make true science fiction great: a deep and complex setting that we spend the whole movie exploring. As we travel through this setting alongside deeply complicated and masterfully written characters we, at the same time, travel through the human condition, exploring the questions this genre is most apt to explore.
