At first I wasn’t the biggest fan of it considering half the movie was driving. But once you really think about it, it symbolizes the loneliness he went through. The few moments he spent with each girl (whom each had a flower name) showed how no matter how hard he tried, he could not replace his true love. The controversial ending represents how much anger mixed in with the grief of losing her.
