The Brutalist is about Creation and Light and Darkness.

The creation of a new life. The creation as in (architectural) innovation. Creation as in being able to carry out your artistic vision (creation vs capitalism).

The light and darkness of human behaviour.

The interplay between light and darkness in architectural terms. Ref. The Church and the sunlight creating a cross of light. Also the architect as creator and god: «And let there be light.

Interesting and well made documentary about the bloody tradition of bullfighting.

Even though we follow the matadorstar, the film is, in its way, a portrait of three intertwainin groups/themes:, the bulls, the bullfighter(s) and the bullfighting tradition itself. The traditions and attitudes of the bullfighting are effectively contrasted with the brutal treatment of the bulls.

We come intensely close - at times uncomfortably close, as the shots linger over the bulls, and is held there, and held there, and held there.

As a footnote, one can’t help but think about Hemingway and his books about bullfighting.

Solid movie. Exciting story with manages to touch upon many subjects during its 2.10 run time. Organized crime in Mexico, the situation in the Mexican society for women, sexchange, identity, and crime and redemption/forgiveness.

Mirroring one of the main characters, the film crosses genres and becomes a unique blend of experimental musical, crimedrama and social critique. The film could easily have been just as good or even better without the musical routine. Apart from that, the deus ex machina ending feels a little too easy and convenient.
