    Swann in Love

Those unfamiliar with the novel will miss lots of context; a subpar experience, not too confusing.

A minor example: Oriane tells Swann "life is a dreadful business", to which Swann replies "dreadful". In the novel we learn what caused Swann (once an optimist who was now filled with jealousy and pessimism) to agree with Oriane, is that her remark comforted him as if she had a shared understanding of Swann's troubles with Odette. This omniscient narrator is missing from the film and fails to convey, so what else is left to see and experience? A stream of unenjoyable references to a work which I admire.

    The Shop Around the Corner

Leaving Lubitsch's funeral, Billy Wilder ruefully said, "No more Lubitsch." William Wyler responded, "Worse than that. No more Lubitsch pictures."

The way Lubitsch introduces his characters in the first sequence—through dialogue and in relation to each other, not individually—is nothing short of a miracle. The ending as well; when the lovers are about to unite, Kralik turns the lights off one by one, as if we are reaching the end, ready to leave, knowing we won’t see anything like this ever again. No more Lubitsch pictures.

    Army of Shadows

The film isn't about the group as much as the individual experiences of its members in their resistance against the occupation.

These characters are not depicted as saints, nor they are antagonized. Faced with dilemmas, they are forced to live in shadows, without names, and some remain unknown, after death and despite their bravery. It's an honest portrayal.
