Schrader made several films where the detective plot appears and then becomes insignificant in the goal of revealing a character, so interesting to see an example of a film where the balance is reversed. feels more conventional
the crucial question for me was this one: what sets apart this beautiful social yet existentialist film from cheap poverty porn that it inspired in the following years?
it seems to me that it is the inherit dignity that titular character possess. she's not driven by poverty, but by her pride. she disagrees with her fate and it elevates her otherwise trivial search for work to some spiritual level
