Upon a second rewatch, I think the key to understanding the ending lies in a much earlier scene: the youth group circle.
Throughout the film Toller is generally brooding and mean spirited. The only times we really see him show interest or compassion, besides to Mary and her husband, is to children. This sequence begins with a young girl asking a very naive and innocent question, essentially, “why is my father poor if he loves god”, which provides an opportunity…
