Miyazaki's best. The film draws you in with an atmosphere of childlike wonder, which is interrupted by the gaudy, somewhat comedic interruptions of the real world. In its universality, the film evades the burden of direct analogy while maintaining a connection to human emotion and experience. The film also explores myth and its connection to a broken world, while handling the themes from Ghibli's best films with care and attention. In a similar manner, the film succeeds at the fantasy…
This shit was honestly fucking fantastic. Every focal character is absolutely well cast and the tonal flexibility of this film was absolutely mind blowing. I think the pacing leaves a little to be desired however, as the final third of the film could have occupied more time relative to the other two perspectives displayed earlier on.
This is pretty close to a perfect movie in my mind if that's a thing that exists. It pretty much challenged my expectations ay every point and thrust me into a 68-esque reflection/critique of the society and thought of today while simultaneously pushing further into that which is infinitely possible. This film both illustrates how we are repressed and pushes forward into how we might be more free.
Immature and insane, as well as completely ignorant of artisanship or film, this film fails on so many levels. I bet its only audience is stoned teenagers.
