So we invent the people we love? That’s dumb.
I think if they played the Joan Baez version of “Sailing” this might have actually destroyed me. And that kiss in the shop behind the mom? Are you kidding me!?
Summer of 85 goes beyond capturing broad nostalgia and asks us to experience something very specific so deeply and profoundly before ripping the carpet out from under us. I don’t know if the drag plot point was entirely where the story needed to go, and I didn’t love the Kate kiss narratively, but really great overall.
Kieran Culkin is crazy good in this, like the kind of dropped-in performance that doesn’t happen all the time. Jesse Eisenberg’s screenplay is best when it moves past neurosis and settles into some real depth. The posing at the monument scene was a favorite of the year. Not easy to make me like a movie with two male leads—congrats!
Great production design, like truly great. Super gay, too, like truly, surprisingly super gay.
