I can forgive American Gangster for its pitfalls in telling the play-by-play “accurate” story of Frank Lucas and his rise as the heroin godfather of Harlem, because it is a really stunning portrayal of one of the more important mob stories in the 20th century. Denzel is as good as you’d expect and an ensemble cast, most of which would go on to be powerhouses in their own rights, are matching every beat he sets, and it’s impossible not to enjoy every minute of it.
