Disturbing. Innovative. Overwhelming. Engrossing. Depressing. Horrific. Raw. Stomach-dropping.

Disclaimer: a drama, not an action movie like the file sounds

Unfortunately the trigger warning is a spoiler so I’ll mark it as such, but I wish I’d had this warning so I could avoid this movie.

    Execution: 4 stars
    Enjoyment: 2 stars

Trigger warning: brainwashing, Stockholm syndrome, gaslighting and manipulation

This is the kind of movie that I like, but I know other people won’t like. It’s not excessively exciting or entertaining, but it contains the kind of dialogue and interactions that make you feel like you’re inside of a world instead of just viewing it.

    Irreverent, original, quirky.

I liked the female character a lot but couldn’t quite engage with the male character, especially after the icky virginity scene. That is, until I caught their chemistry and banter. I love any romcom that explores more than just physical chemistry between characters, specifically with an extra helping of engaging dialogue. I thoroughly enjoyed Rory’s “conversations” with her mother and wish that could have been explored further. I liked how the movie also (somewhat messily) explored sexual identity…
