Words were involuntarily leaving my mouth in response to the events in this film. Not from shock at the worst things it shows, but from the closeness I felt with Karoline. Normally, I'm able to maintain an emotional distance from horrific events in film. Here, the realism and Sonne's performance remove that distance. The photography and lighting??? Otherworldly. A pair of eyes glowing in the dark. Humans as monsters.

A time capsule movie for better and worse. A lot of filming decisions that don't immediately make sense for modern interpretation. But also rewarding if you can let go and immerse in the reality the movie depicts. Walken, Streep, and Deniro are stunning.

Historically accurate yellow teeth in a period film finally.

It felt a bit like a student film. An enjoyable one, if a little superficial. Couldn't help but feel that the 2 main leads were mostly playing themselves, even if they do that to great effect sometimes. Culkin especially is channeling something (a real pain?) that unexpectedly pulled emotion out of me, and I was deeply troubled by the final shot. As a Benji who has been flattened or stretched to be more like a David now to survive, I just wanted him to be ok.

Notable scene: Benji receives heartfelt goodbyes from the entire tour group. David gets a wave.
