  Given the many 2001 comparisons, I was expecting similar exploration about humanity's place in the universe. Solaris is not about that- it's about what it is to be a human, and love a human, and live with regret- and it happens to have a beautiful space backdrop.

  Why are we being tortured this way?

  I think it's because we've lost sense of the cosmos. The ancients understood it perfectly. They'd never have questioned the cosmos: Why? What for? Remember the myth of Sisyphus?
