There’s a feeling of insurmountable distance, the swirling lacuna between people that is as obscure as it is tantalising. You see it in incessant tug of humanity against will, the choreographed rhythm of a mouse chase, the glow of your own reflection as you face an enemy.
In High and Low, Kurasawa’s scope is vast, the subject is often obfuscated by a camera that can explode the view of characters reacting in frieze-like suspension. At the same time, his focus is sharp, leading the chase right around to the chaser.
