This film has a very opulent fashion show (vatican) and along with Clowns and Toby Dammit, they have lush and luxury haute couture costumes. They are my favorite Fellini films. I havent seen Casanova but I think it is very exotic as all Fellini post-8 1/2 period.

The Taking of Power by Louis XIV 1966
Rossellini goes megalomaniac with the pictorial oriented retelling of history, the saturated opulent texture echoes what Visconti will do (or not do) in Ludwig, with the room of mirrors scene. Barry Lyndon also learned from this with the pictorial approach. The spectator has to not follow plot and narrative convention to embrace the Rossellini masterpiece. Similarly to the other opulent masters Fellini & Visconti, cinema was achieving new levels of experimentation by ending the 60s, being this one the most interesting films of all Rossellini oeuvre, who started this?.
