History will give this movie glory and fame as a decade-defining landmark of its genre. It is profoundly upsetting, with multiple moments that you will remember vividly for the rest of your life, even if you only ever see the movie once. If ya like that kind of shit, you’ve probably seen this already, right?
Okay, so the dialogue is frequently bad, the visual effects are mediocre, the score is uninspiring, and the script fails to make any of the characters relatable, likable, or even interesting. (with the exception of Tommy Chong’s small supporting character, who is just barely amusing) Even if it had been based on a terrific idea, there are plenty of examples of how it was poorly executed.
But all those things are actually pretty minor flaws compared to The Big Problem…
Gaspar Noe doing what he does best: stressing you out. Chaotic, anxious, trippy. Some really interesting and creative filmmaking conventions, a couple of which I haven’t seen any other director use. No time wasted, short runtime flew by before I knew it. Smart use of theme and technique. Some good acting, too.

Oh, and they are NOT kidding when they make a big deal about the flashing light/epilepsy warning at the beginning. I’m not epileptic and even I felt overstimulated and nauseous during the strobe light part. Be warned: this one could definitely give someone a seizure.
Couldn’t look away for even a second. A PERFECT high-stakes, suspenseful, shocking, terrifying thrill. Not a single instance of bad acting or bad writing in the entire movie. The violence and blood/gore is never exaggerated or larger-than-life, in fact it feels so grounded in reality that it’s scarier than any other movie violence I can remember. The danger feels real. The main characters are not safe. Everything is not going to be okay.
