Doesn’t feel right to give a star rating to something which functions more as an act of witness than a piece of art.
This is one of the scariest things I’ve seen recently, and absolutely essential viewing. How such cruelty can be defended or excused is beyond me. There’s a scene where a ‘unauthorised’ well is destroyed which made me feel worse than any horror movie ever has.
I hope this work brings its subjects the visibility they deserve.
Not unlike Salo thematically: fascism presented not as a unique evil, but as an expression of an inherent depravity which will continue to surface so long as it is unlocked. But - more than that - it's a compelling vehicle for the delivery of disgust, and an extremely effective horror.
Haunting and atmospheric: the inky lighting, the electronic score (which doesn't sound at all dated), the slow camera movements, the way the environment seems to decay as the film goes…
