The recipe is simple:
make the sad scenes sad
make the nostalgic scenes nostalgic
most italian love story ever in rural sicilian city:
big tears in the end
Do not fear the long drawn-out first part, it is just fuel to make the second part feel unimaginably nostalgic. The only problem with this film is the unnecessary out-of-nowhere italian caricatures that want to be funny but aren't.
(also this is pitollo origin story)
This is a film designed to make you sad (and since I felt sad after watching it I guess it worked). However it also felt like a giant edging session for the expected tearjerking ending. I like films with unexplained details to fill in and wonder about, but only if I really care about the protagonists; here everything seems to be manufactured to maximize the sadness of the spectator. It felt like a sad story about a friend of a friend of a friend narrated so that every scene tells you just enough to keep you wanting more, but never actually develops a real plot.
This movie really tries hard to compensate its shallowness with upsetting and shocking scenes that just made me laugh for how absurd they were. I didn’t really care about anybody and the ending is ridiculous, like a school’s project due tomorrow that you hastily finish before class.
