The Witch 2015
By far Eggers’ best film. The layering of the conflicts at play - new vs. old world, human-made vs. natural-borne evil, the comforting structure of religion vs. the chaotic freedom to pave one’s own path - makes the film a definite standout in spite of a comparatively plain cinematography relative to Lighthouse and Nosferatu. Anya Taylor-Joy is endlessly compelling as Thomasin, but in truth every member of the family delivers on their carefully designed characterization. Out of all his films, The VVitch has made me reflect and question the most - and that’s what great art is meant to do.
