Bursting with ridiculous and glorious fun, this movie somehow gets it right and has a big heart.
Personally I prefer the more charming and chilled Ghibli movies aimed at a younger audience but (having finally watched this for the first time), this is pretty epic.
I find this version understated, many of the comedic lines missed or underplayed, a bit too sombre - I don't think I laughed out loud once, just perhaps a little chuckle here and there. Alexis Denisof is a great actor, but he is NOT Benedick, his deliverance of the lines was very disappointing, but Amy Acker is fantastic as Beatrice, though I'm not 100% sure she is my favourite (Emma Thompson nails it, imo, though admittedly I'm biased as Branagh's…
Despite quite enjoying the main characters, this one fell flat for me. The backgrounds are washed out and unmoving, the setting and its music is inconsistent (a '20s speakeasy in the middle of Victorian London?!), and it just ended up feeling like uninteresting shenanigans.
