Joe is actually sentient, as opposed to the faux-human puppy that is David. The only genuine and 'human' connection David makes is with Joe, and he's the only character in the movie that actually comes across as self-aware.

A Field in England 2013
Probably the most consistent film Ben Wheatley has ever made. It may be slow but I've found it increasingly well structured and well conceived on rewatch. It may be overbearingly strange at times but if you approach the film with a care-free (hint: high) attitude and allow it wash over you, I think you'll be blown away.
The final act is marvel of psychedelic editing and there are multiple moments of filmmaking flair that genuinely elevate the film above its competition. It's weird and slow, but if you're into that it can be hilarious, terrifying and transfixing in equal measure.
