I’ve heard about this film for years. It’s popped up on lists here and there, but no one has ever endorsed it enthusiastically to me. In fact, the title always felt haughty and aloof: “Paradise Cinema? Okay, I’ll be the judge of that!”

But here’s the deal…if you like film, if you like art, this is ESSENTIAL viewing. It’s the greatest work of metafilm I’ve ever seen, making me feel like I just saw the first great movie ever. I feel like a more complete person having seen it.

I used to think the title was high-flown pap, but it couldn’t be more accurate.

Teddy: Wait, is this a kissing movie?
Me: Are you kidding?! Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…

    I love this movie.

The payoff wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for, but I’m very much here for Hugh Grant’s heel turn over the last few years.

I once had a student compare this film to Huck Finn. Now that I’ve finally watched it, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that comment.

I do think, however, Taika Waititi had an awful amount of fun making this. The narrative is a bit thin, but the visuals are striking and the relationships are very sweet.

I’m still working through the 21st Century Best Picture noms, and 2019 seems to be putting up a strong overall selection!

Is Aladdin an underrated Disney movie?
    ✅ Elite villain
    ✅ multiple hit songs
    ✅cool male lead
✅ fairly progressive female lead (especially for ‘92)
✅ THREE strong sidekicks for each major character
✅ peak Robin Williams voice acting

It’s a chaotic, messy, violent pile of fun—a great buddy comedy—but I’m still shocked they didn’t make out once.
